"The purpose of art is to lay bare the questions that have been hidden by the answers."

James Baldwin, writer

Darlings,

These divisions between disciplines, whether they be academics, athletics or arts are nonsense and frankly, tiring. Any academic struggles and/or achievements- in comprehension, problem solving, expression, creativity, cognition at every level- impact what is also experienced on the field and on the stage because each of our disciplines, our daily practices, requires thinking and some performative element to prepare for that puts each of these domains on display, whether that be an exam, a concert, an art show, or a game.

It is all connected, it is all valuable, and it is all essential to the intellectual, creative and interior/character/spiritual growth and development of each person in our care.

Please don't ever, ever suggest that our students are "just" singing a song, "just" drawing a picture, or "just" throwing a ball and that we, the "non-academic" teachers, aren't also acutely aware of the needs of the whole child and do our part to enrich and fulfill these needs to the best of our abilities through the subjects we teach.

And definitely don't suggest otherwise during concert season.

Love, Jenn
